Westgate Earns First Westside Royalty Cup
Posted September 16, 2019
Westgate Elementary is the first winner of the Westside Royalty Cup, a new honor highlighting staff members, departments, and schools who work to make students, families and coworkers feel like royalty at Westside.
Tonya Gordon, Westgate 3rd Grade Teacher, earned this honor for her school. Fellow teacher Mary Morris nominated Gordon for the honor, writing the following:
- “I would like to nominate my teaching partner, Tonya Gordon for Teacher of the Month! This is her third year at Westgate and her 18th year of teaching.Tonya has been a great addition to our school. She understands the importance of building relationships with students to meet their needs. She has high expectations for ALL of her students and will do anything to support them academically. You will often hear her make comments about wanting to adjust a lesson to better fit her students.I couldn’t feel more blessed to have her as a teaching partner. Even though the two of us are considered veterans, we learn from each other everyday. She is a life-long learner and challenges herself to become a better teacher. Tonya is very collaborative and appreciates our “team” mentality. She is a high quality teacher and I truly feel Westgate is lucky to have her:) Not only does she strive to be better, she makes me strive to be better too!”
Superintendent Dr. Mike Lucas and Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Enid Schonewise surprised Gordon with the honor this month. Westgate now holds the Royalty Cup for the month of September, and all Westgate staff are awarded a pizza lunch to celebrate their efforts, thanks to a grant from the Westside Foundation.
“Tonya is a very talented member of our Westgate team and well deserving!” said Principal Amanda Moon. “We are excited for her to be surprised with this honor. Our entire Westgate team is excited!”
Gordon and Moon will also be honored by the Westside Board of Education on September 16.
